Cancer has emerged as one of the biggest threats to mankind in recent times – and continues to be among the leading causes of death the world over. While there has been progressing in cancer treatments, and it is possible to combat cancer with treatments like chemotherapy, it is also true that it’s a painful process.

In Canada, the most common form of cancer in breast cancer, with 26% patients out of all cancer types. Around 25,700 women and 230 men are predicted to have been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 alone.

But due to the effort of many organizations, the number of deaths from breast cancer is coming down steadily. In fact, mortality rates have come down by 44% since 1987 when it was at its peak! We can talk about many such institutions but the work of the Atlantic Breast Cancer Net has been exemplary.

Origins of the Atlantic Breast Cancer Net (ABCN)

ABCN was established in 1993 dedicated to improving health and life of women of all ages in Canada and across the world. It facilitates collection, production, distribution, and exchange of information, knowledge, ideas, strategies, resources and inspiration among the members of the organization.

The members of ABCN come from all walks of life. They include activists, researchers, academicians, caregivers, community workers and normal people who have the same aim of improving health and lifestyle of women of all ages all around the globe.

The vision and activities of ABCN

ABCN takes up different activities which fall under the scope of its vision of improvement of life and health of women. It puts strong effort to create awareness about women health in the country of Canada so that they become aware of the nuances of breast cancer and are able to manage their life effectively.

The patients can get access to accurate information and reliable health information in a user-friendly way. They also benefit from the research and resources presented to them for fighting breast cancer. The agency also works to bring equal healthcare to all women by involving them and their expertise.

Clinicians, researchers, policymakers and media can benefit from the knowledge collected and shared by ABCN. They can improve patient outcome and develop effective treatment options to fight breast cancer. ABCN also encourages communities to participate in the research for optimal results.

ABCN keeps a continuous track on the health issues in Canada and worldwide affecting the lives of women. Any emerging trend or issue comes into its knowledge and paves the way for further research and solution creation. The organization also provides a platform to share and debate policy issues and research on women health including breast cancer.

ABCN works with the Canadian Women’s Health Network so that its work reaches the largest number of women. It is a national and voluntary and non-profit organization working for many years and created a name for itself for its work in breast cancer in Canada and beyond.

The contributions of Canadian Breast Cancer Support Fund

Breast cancer still remains the most common form of cancer in Canada in spite of the declining mortality rates. Still today, 1 out of 8 Canadian women have breast cancer and each hour 3 people (including male and female) are diagnosed with the disease.

Many institutions are fighting against the disease and investing in research to come up with effective clinical treatments. The Bras Family Foundation (BRAS) is one such name that has contributed a lot in creating a humanitarian environment for patients suffering from cancer. It provides different beneficial services to cancer patients and also facilitates the operation of drug development programs at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto.

BRAS invests in grants for important purposes to create a difference in the community. Apart from working on health issues, they also concentrate on women and children issues. They also have a specific grant for patients with breast cancer which we are going to talk about.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Support Fund

With breast cancer continuing to throw in the lives of women around the world in a daze, many sufferers look at money for treatment and to lead a normal life.

BRAS has set up a grant that offers patients the funds they need in the near future to treat their disease. Many patients in Canada are still not educated or aware of the money involved that comes with a diagnosis. As a result, patients find it difficult to withstand the burden of breast cancer treatment makes matters worse.

Many of the patients also don’t have workplace health-care coverage which it difficult to access treatment. Under certain conditions, they may also be ineligible for assistance or benefits provided by the government. Missing wages and paying for treatment is almost impossible for such people.

How does it help?

The patients covered by the Canadian Breast Cancer Support Fund mostly live below the poverty line and have very low incomes. For these reasons, the fund comes really helpful for the breast cancer patients in Canada. They can use the fund to pay for food and shelter and the organization reimburses them for any expense on different things such as medication, childcare, prosthetics and restorative procedures.

The patients covered under the fund include both men and women from all walks of life- some of them are married or single, divorced, widowed, young mothers, working women, unemployed, self-employed, students- the list is endless. What is common among all patients is that they don’t have any support of extended family and mostly living alone in poor conditions. Clinically, the patients include both women with early stages of breast cancer and those who have breast cancer with metastatics.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Support Fund under BRAS has made a significant contribution by investing generously for the health and survival of the patients  who have poor breast cancer. The efforts of such organizations are the cause of stabilization of breast cancer cases in Canada.

The role of CCS and CBCF in fighting breast cancer

The incidents of breast cancer have risen significantly in modern times. It is a serious disease that affects 1 Canadian woman out of 8 during her lifetime. The incidents are rarer in men but still exist. If we go by statistics, 230 men and 26,300 women in Canada had been diagnosed in 2017 with breast cancer. Per hour, at least 3 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada.

The number of deaths is also not to ignore- 43 men and 5,000 women have been thought to have died in 2017 due to breast cancer.

There are a number of causes of breast cancer and lack of awareness among the public about the disease. But many organizations and institutes are engaged in research and study of the disease while devising and implementing solutions to prevent the disease. An important organization fighting for the cause of breast cancer is the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS).

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) is also another crucial name when it comes to the fight against breast cancer. Recently, both of them have come together to strengthen the fight and educate the public about the disease.

The merger of CBCF and CCS: what does it mean?

CCS invests in research and treatment of all types of cancer but focuses on breast cancer as a priority. The organization joined hands with the CBCF in February, 2017 to improve their operations and efficiency.

CCS generally works with all sorts of cancer and has invested $1.2 billion over the course of 30 years on all cancers out of which $100 million had been spent in breast cancer. The merger with CBCF enables the organization to invest on breast cancer and provide necessary support for people suffering from the disease.

CBCF itself was established in 1986 and invested over $360 million in the area of breast cancer. It has also provided the funds for more than 1,400 community and scientific grants. CBCF also takes part in educating the patients and promote their health providing support and information so that they can lead their lives normally.

The support programs provided through the collaboration of the organizations aim to empower the patients and enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer. CBCF has now become a part of CCS but the spirit, activities, and mandates of the former are very much alive. Together the organizations have committed to fight breast cancer and remove the fear of the disease from the land of Canada.

How does it make a difference?

Breast cancer continues to be a major cause of death the world over among women, and that can be largely avoided with the right precautions.

Both the organizations can help in programs which will prevent, treat and make it possible to detect breast cancer at an early stage so that it can be effectively treated. It can be made possible through awareness and education campaigns directed at the public.

The role of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada

Among the most potent forms of cancer the world over, the breast cancer still remains a potent threat to women.

Over the years, the number of breast cancer incidents in Canada has stabilized. Yet, it is the most common form of cancer that the population is diagnosed with. 26% of all women cancer patients suffer from breast cancer while 1 out of 30 women is likely to die from it. In 2016, around 25,700 women in Canada had breast cancer while only 230 males suffered from the disease.

The drop in mortality rates and success of treatment are direct contributions of organizations involved in research and healthcare. It is due to their research that innovative and successful diagnosis and treatment procedures have been developed while the public has become more aware.

The Breast Cancer Society of Canada is a significant contributor investing in breast cancer research for close to three decades. Let’s explore its activities and contributions in the field of breast cancer.

Origins of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC)

In 1991, Lawrence and Kay had to meet one of the most disastrous times of their life. They lost their 38- year-old daughter Pam who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She had two loving kids who were all alone in the world only with their father to look after them. But instead of giving up, the two families made it a mission of their lives to fight the disease and do everything in their power to help prevent and treat it.

As a result, the BCSC was established as a non-profit organization which devoted itself to breast cancer research. They try to raise money so that more research can be conducted in the field of breast cancer. The organization doesn’t receive any government funding and depends solely on the contribution of its donors.

BCSC has the vision to bring an end to breast cancer and a mission to save lives by conducting breast cancer research.

Activities of BCSC: what does it do?

Breast cancer remains a concern the world over, and organizations like the BCSC helps to bring in awareness.

The primary activity of BCSC is to improve diagnosis of breast cancer and come up with effective treatments. The Pan-Canadian Virtual Research Laboratory of BCSC gives people access to clinical trials where innovative treatments for breast cancer are carried out.

One of the main priorities is to improve the patient outcome. New technology and advancement in the scientific and medical community have produced improved methods of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Using the funding from donors, BCSC engages in facilitating research and deliver measurable and practical solutions to patients in Canada.

The organization specifically works on patient’s molecular testing so that they can be effectively screened for the disease. The agency is a strong force bringing disruption in breast cancer research delivering the results from the lab directly to the clinics; they are less concerned about its academic value.
